Cognitive undertook a challenging project to re-engineer an early-stage legacy online portal. Originally one of the first in its directory, this portal was built on IBM’s proprietary platform and contained vast amounts of content. As data volume grew significantly, the need for improved scalability and technology updates posed a considerable challenge, with substantial costs projected for revamping the portal on the same platform.

Innovative Solution

Cognitive conducted an in-depth analysis of the business model and existing product functionalities. They provided a solution using open-source Java technology with the OpenEdit content management system. This approach preserved all existing functionalities while offering a more dynamic and scalable architecture. The revamped solution is an Industrial Product Listing Directory that includes both a portal and a comprehensive back-office order booking and billing system.

New Features and Benefits

A notable new feature introduced is the ability for Industrial Product subscribers to list excess items and scraps on the portal. Other subscribers can procure these items, whether rare or needed in specific quantities, directly through the portal. This feature has been highly appreciated by subscribers, enabling them to liquidate surplus stock and providing buyers with better cost propositions.
